FIFA World Cup 1990 Group D

fifa world cup 1990 posterColombia, playing in the finals for the first time since 1962, fielded a flamboyant side that featured René "El Loco" Higuita in goal and the supremely talented Carlos Valderrama, whose huge blonde afro made him one of the most recognisable players on the planet. The United Arab Emirates (known as Al Abyad - the Sand Monkeys) made their debut but were no match for the other teams in the group. West Germany, coached by Franz Beckenbauer and with Rudi Völler, Jürgen Klinsmann and Lothar Matthäus in their side were among the favourites to win the competition.

With two minutes left Klinsmann made a superb run through the Colombian defence before laying the ball off to Littbarski who took the ball on from the edge of the box before crashing it home. With three minutes of injury time played, however, Valderrama played a series of one-twos to penetrate the German defence before threading the ball through to Freddy Rincón on the right who promptly slotted the ball between the legs of West Germany's goalkeeper for a sensational equaliser. The point earned was enough for Colombia to progress in third place.
