It was now FIFA's policy for the holders rather than the host nation to kick off the tournament. As usual caution and nerves got the better of the teams who ground out an uninspiring goalless draw.

Vázquez Ayala put Mexico into the lead with a penalty at the end of the first half. Ten minutes after the break Ali Kaabi equalised with a neat shot from the edge of the area. With ten minutes to go, Ghommidh found himself unmarked on the left and slotted the ball past Mexico's goalkeeper. Six minutes later Mexico's defenders failed to spot Dhouieb running through on the right, where he picked up a pass and chipped the ball into the net.

Mexico's kits carried the Levi's brand.

There was no sign of nerves this time out for West Germany, who took Mexico apart with clinical precision.

West Germany were already through to the next phase so were not inclined to take any risks but this poor result meant they would finish behind Poland.

Boniek put Poland ahead as half time approached but Mexico equalised six minutes after the break. Deyna restored Poland's lead after 55 minutes and Boniek sealed it up seven minutes from time. Mexico went home without a point but if there had been a prize for the team with the biggest hair, they would have walked away with it.
