League Two 2019 - 2020

efl league two

Along with other professional competitions, League Two was suspended on March 13 due to the rapid growth of the Covid-19 pandemic. On 15 May the clubs voted to end the season with places to be decided on a points-per-game basis. No decision was taken at this stage about promotion and relegation pending a meeting of the League One clubs to be held three weeks later.

Once the League One clubs reached their own decision, play-offs were completed at the end of June and it was confirmed that Stevenage (who finished bottom) would be relegated to the National League while two teams would be promoted thereby restoring the EFL to 72 members.

After finishing rock bottom of League One, Bradford have decided to cheer everyone up by wearing striped shirts and black shorts, a favourite combination. The modern twist is that the amber stripes are a bit narrower than the claret and are edged in black. The change strip is extremely smart. The third strip is dubbed "Our Energy" no doubt because the colour is that of Lucozade (other energy drinks are available).

Hummel have taken over from Puma as Cambridge's technical sponsor. The first shirts appear to be a little lighter than before but otherwise are fairly traditional. The change shirt was chosen by supporters and is based on a version worn in 1993-94, a timely reminder of how awful kit design was at the time.

Errea's Eiger design is pleasant enough but without the usual red accents, the blue and white set seems rather anonymous. The colour of the alternative is disarmingly "After Eight" according to Errea's catalogue.

Cheltenham have retained their attractive striped kit and have a new secondary strip in two shades of blue. The bands on the shirt are made up of narrow horizontal lines. The charity kit came in two versions: the one shown was worn by the team and a limited edition version with the full Hollie Gazzard Trust logo was made available to supporters.

Fifty years ago Colchester dropped their traditional stripes in favour of an all-blue strip worn with white socks closely modelled on what Chelsea had worn a few years earlier. The revival is is spoilt by fussy white detailing and not a patch on the original. As Colchester is a garrison town I suppose wearing camouflage patterns is understandable but the new change kit is definitely spoilt by the blue detailing.

For first choice Alex have selected a deceptively simple red and white outfit but the shirt grades to deep red at the sides and the shoulders, an effect that, like the Belgian sense of humour, is almost too subtle to detect.* The alternative is a striking affair in gold and black on which the fade effect is much more pronounced.

FGR had a memorable second season in the EFL, finishing fifth and qualifying for the play-offs where they were beaten by Tranmere. Player Layer, who stepped in after the club tore up their contract with Hummel last year, have come up with an outrageous "Zebra Kit" which will be hard to miss. These are manufactured using fibre that consists of 50% bamboo. The dazzle camouflage third kit is a tribute to FGR's charity partner, Sea Shepherd.

The use of red as a third colour on Grimsby's first choice strip goes back a long way, over 80 years in fact, and it is there this season but you have to look carefully to find it. Pink was a popular choice for the third kit a couple of years ago and has been revived in a new version.

Over the years the O's have survived many crises and bounced back and here they are again. Two years after being relegated they have new ownership and are the champions of the National League. After years of sterile Puma and Nike templates they are now partnered with New Balance who have come up with a glorious celebration of one of Orient's most iconic motifs, the chevron. Furthermore, their second strip is blue, their colours when they were previously known as Leyton Orient between 1946 and 1966.

County's shirts were designed by a fan, Neil Heard, and appear without sponsorship as part of the bookmakers' promotional campaign to "reclaim football shirts for the fans." The amber first strip has a striking geometrical lightning bolt motif in yellow while the alternative features broken chevrons. Both sets are thoroughly modern and rather attractive. Supporters were invited to subscribe £50 to have their names printed onto the planned third kit. The money raised will go to Fraser Franks, the former Newport defender forced to retire in March due to heart problems. The design itself was chosen by Franks. County were expected to wear this new strip for their visit to Cambridge but it failed to arrive so an alternative white outfit was hastily put together.

Back in the late Middle Ages I watched the Cobblers play in all-claret under the half-dozen or so 30 watt bulbs that passed for floodlights at the old County Ground and the players were practically invisible. I suppose things have moved on but I can't help but think that having two dark strips is a bad idea. In fact the new first strip is almost identical to last season's, just the shirt updated to the latest Vapor II design.

Argyle were relegated last season so it's time to refresh their appearance with a new shade of "Argyle Green" replacing the very dark tone worn in recent seasons (and which often caused problems in floodlit games). The peppercorn green introduced last season reappears in a deeply unpleasant change shirt. The black third strip is going to be needed at Forest Green and has proved very popular with supporters.

Salford have risen remarkably quickly through the pyramid since they were taken over by the Class of '92 former Manchester United players and now find themselves in the English Football League for the first time. A three year deal has been signed with Kappa. First choice is consistent with previous kits, red/white/white but now with yet another fading graphic effect on the shirt. The remaining kits offer plenty of contrast and the ability to mix and match if necessary.

The club claims the shirt is an exclusive design created for them by Puma which will come as a surprise to all the other teams wearing the same template. So let's have a look at what Errea have served up for Walsall. A neat, traditional red and white strip with a rather fussy collar and sublimated bands on the chest. Not bad at all. The black set has the sort of graphic that convinces me the kit designers are conspiring to make my life as difficult as possible. The third kit is aqua and black with yet another complicated graphic on the sleeves.
