FIFA World Cup 1966 Knock Out Stages

world cup 1966 posterAlthough the group matches and semi-finals were staggered, all the quarter-final matches were played simultaneously. While English TV audiences watched on the edge of their seats as their team played Argentina, the extraordinary and constantly changing score line from Goodison Park kept flashing up on the screen.

The finals concluded in a dramatic finale at Wembley, full of twists and turns and a goal that remains controversial to this day. England had won the Jules Rimet Trophy.

Portugal 5 North Korea 3

Goodison Park, Liverpool (51,870)
23 July 1966

In an astonishing match, North Korea scored within a minute of the kick off. Portugal pressed forward but were caught twice on the break, in the 22nd and 25th minutes when Li Dong-Woon and Yang Seung-Kook made it 3-0. Eusébio now took the game by the scruff of the neck with a goal in the 27th minute. Three minutes before half-time, Portugal were awarded a penalty and it was Eusébio who converted it. In the second half, he scored twice in two minutes (including another penalty) to put Portugal into the lead. With ten minutes left, Portugal had a corner, which Eusébio took. After signaling to Torres, he swung the ball precisely onto the giant centre-forward's head, he nodded it back towards Augusto who made it 5-3.

Uruguay contributed to their own defeat with a display of wilful indiscipline in the second half. West Germany were ahead at half-time following a 12th minute goal by Zigi Held, but still in the match. Five minutes after the restart, the linesman brought the attention of the referee, Jim Finney, to the prone figure of Emmerich. After a brief consultation, Finney sent off the Uruguayan captain, Troche. Moments later, this time in full view of Mr Finney, Silva hacked down Haller and, despite the intervention of players, coaches and trainers, he was persuaded to leave the field with the assistance of police officers. Against such diminished opposition, the German scored three late goals to conclude the farce.

Hungary's two star players, Florian Albert and Ferenc Bene were marked out of the game (although Bene did score the Magyars' goal). The Soviets capitalised on two close range chances in the first half and although Hungary managed to pull one back in the second half, they could not break through a determined defence after that

Argentina allowed the very worst of their instincts to prevail in a match that, had they relied on their skill and team work, they could undoubtedly have won. The crowd hooted, booed, jeered and laughed as Argentina's players jostled, pushed, held and tripped their opponents. England were far from blameless, conceding just as many free-kicks but most considered these the result of typically robust English tackles. The game descended into farce when the West German referee finally had enough and dismissed the Argentinian captain, Antonio Rattin in the 35th minute. Rattin, looming over the diminutive Rudolf Kreitlein, refused to leave: play was held up for seven minutes and it seemed at one stage that the entire Argentinian team would storm off. Eventually order was restored and in the 78th minute, Geoff Hurst, deputising for Jimmy Greaves, headed home the winning goal.

Moments after Haller had given West Germany the lead in the first-half, Chislenko, the Soviet outside right, was sent off. West Germany were depleted by injury after their encounter with Uruguay, but against a ten-man opposition they were firmly in control. An uncharacteristic error by Yashin in the Soviet goal allowed a long shot from Beckenbauer in to make it 2-0. With three minutes left, the German goalkeeper dropped the ball to allow Malofeyev to score but it was too late to make any difference.

England faced their stiffest test so far in a match that provided a welcome contrast to some of the cynical tactics seen in earlier matches. The match was free flowing and played in the best spirit by players prepared to compete to the best of their ability while maintaining respect for each other. Bobby Charlton scored for England on the half-hour and in the second half, the tension mounted as Portugal pressed as hard as they could. With ten minutes left, Charlton struck with one of his trademark thunderbolts. As he trotted back up field, Augusto put out his hand to congratulate him. Two minutes later Jack Charlton handled the ball on the goal line and Eusébio converted the penalty to set up a thrilling finale but England held on by the skin of their teeth.

England 4 West Germany 2 (after extra time)

Wembley Stadium, London (98,000)
30 July 1966

England fell behind early to a swift passing move finished off by Haller. Hurst equalised six minutes later and with 12 minutes to go, Martin Peters put England in front. With seconds left, West Germany were awarded a free-kick deep in England's territory: the ball cannoned across the goal mouth where Weber crashed it home from close range. In the interval before extra-time started, Ramsey exhorted his players to go out and win the game again and in the 101st minute everyone held their breath after Hurst crashed the ball onto the underside of the bar from where it bounced down and back into play. After a lengthy consultation conducted in sign language between the Swiss referee and his Russian linesman a goal was awarded. Then, in the final seconds, Hurst sprinted from half way and crashed the ball past the helpless Tilkowski to make it 4-2.
