FIFA World Cup 1930 Knock Out Stages

world cup poster 1930If attendances in the group matches (other than those involving the hosts and their neighbours across the River Plate) had been disappointing, the competition now came to life. The extra ferries laid on proved inadequate and as many as 15,000 Argentinians took to whatever craft they could get aboard chanting victoria o muerte (victory or death) for the final.

A detailed history of the 1930 World Cup finals is available on Soccer Nostalgia.

In heavy rain, the match took a distinctly nasty turn and the United States lost Raphael Tracy with a broken leg after ten minutes. The US did well to hold Argentina to a single goal at half-time but in the second half, their superior pace and numerical advantage led to a rout.

Vujadinović gave Yugoslavia an unexpected lead in the fourth minute. The hosts soon hit back and were 3-1 up at half-time, although their opponents had a goal controversially disallowed just before half-time. Three more goals in the second half put Uruguay into the final.

The final was a re-run of the 1928 Olympics final and would be played out in a febrile atmosphere. The ground was full three hours before kick-off and the Belgian referee, John Langenus, insisted that a boat be made ready so that he could be evacuated if necessary. FIFA had to intervene in a dispute over who would provide the match ball and ruled that Argentina would provide one for the first half, Uruguay for the second.

The match ebbed and flowed, Uruguay taking an early lead but Argentina led 2-1 at half-time. In the second half the home team took control and scored three times to become the first world champions. The following day was declared a national holiday in Uruguay while in Argentina, a mob stoned the Uruguayan embassy.
