Historical Football Kits

The Football League 1965 - 1966

football league logo 1888In the ten years between 1955 and 1965, kits evolved very considerably. The heavy shirts, baggy knee length shorts and thick woollen stockings disappeared, as did the V neck shirts popular at the turn of the decade. The abolition of the maximum wage and the emergence of "pop" culture led to talented players, most notably George Best, being elevated to the status of popular icons. The days of professional footballers as skilled working-class artisans were ending. The trend for "modernisation" was reflected in the design of football kits, with many traditional outfits being discarded in favour of simple outfits with crew neck shirts. The fashion, started by Coventry and Chelsea, for matching shirts and shorts is especially evident.
