Historical Football Kits Updates

Contributions from visitors as well as my own continuing research mean that new material is being added to the archive all the time. Here is a month by month summary of additions, corrections and updates to the site.

December 2007

31 December: The superb image presented here is of Civil Service FC taken in 1893 and was sent to me by Pete Walker on behalf of this fine old club. CSFC helped form the Football Association in 1863, were influential in exporting the game around the world and are still going strong. This kit has been added to the Classics gallery.

My appeal for information about the V neck shirt worn by George Best published three days ago prompted an immediate response from Paul Nagel, Kevin Watts and Alexander Howells, who identified the kit as having been worn in the first two months of the 1967-68 season by Manchester United.

Other updates: Accrington Stanley (missing manufacturer logos added for kits between 2003 and 2007). Bristol City (1986-92 badge amended: 1981-82 missing manufacturer's logo added: 2006-07 shorts detailing corrected). Clyde (1982-84, 1984-86 missing logo added). Kilmarnock (1988-89 sponsor's logo corrected). Mansfield Town (2007-08 away kit added). QPR (1992-93 manufacturer corrected). Rushden & Diamonds (several missing logos added). Scarborough (several missing logos added). Wolves (1887 corrected, 1935-36 dates amended, 1928-29 removed pending further research).

To all our visitors and contributors, we wish you a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.

28 December: This kit is a bit of a puzzle, showing George Best of Manchester United in a V-neck kit sometime in the 1960s. If you can shed any light on this, please let me know.

In January 1889 Burnley turned out in plain black shirts as a mark of respect for a player who died from an injury sustained playing for Staveley FC. (January 1889 corrected, 1989-90 added, 1990-91, 1991-93 corrected.)

Colchester United (1984-85 added). Mansfield Town (1984-85 corrected). Stockport County (1984-85 corrected). Portsmouth (1978-79 corrected). Greenock Morton (1985-86, 1987-88 added; 1988-89 amended; some missing logos added.)

26 December: I trust you have all enjoyed your Christmas Day. I can now announce the three winners of our Xmas Replica Kit competition:

Mark Sweeney is awarded the HFK "persistence" award:

As a kid in Merseyside in the early seventies I was obsessed with football kits. I had a crazy idea that nobody had collected an entire set of football league shirts  - all 92. I did not want new kits or reproduction kits from the club shop. I wanted the real thing one that had been worn in an actual game, with mud and grass stains, preferably unwashed.

Aged 10 I decided to write a letter to every football club and explain my quest. No small feat in the days before word processors I did not even have access to a typewriter. So over the Christmas holidays from school I penned 92 individual handwritten letters to each and every football club . The response was both unanimous and unerringly unfavourable all our shirts are used in training sorry”.

I opened each response with anticipation and then got used to the polite rejection. I did get letterheads from 50% of the clubs including signatures from several famous managers, Ron Saunders , John Bond , Ron Atkinson and others. The best was from Harry Catterick which was more personable than the other one liners I really wanted that Everton shirt too as my whole family were Toffeemen but it was not to be! . To this day I enjoy browsing retro shirt sites and reading club histories. Exiled in the USA my American wife occasionally surprises me with a shirt for my birthday or Christmas, I still get that same excitement when I open the box!

Christopher Worrall gets a prize for remaining within the 100 word limit and including an Xmas theme:

I'll never forget Christmas 1978 when I got an admiral Spurs home kit. How it thrilled me. I'd been in love with the strip since I saw it in the pages of SHOOT! that summer. Team group – Ossie and Ricky resplendent, admiral advert – Wales tracksuit, Coventry away, Detroit Express. January's first games lesson was a giddy experience for me, running out on that rock-hard, frosty school field in my new Spurs kit. You had to be nine in '78 to understand that admiral's collection of those days has never been surpassed. Joyful, repeated sleeve symbol perfection.

And finally Tom Derbyshire is awarded the "Team that replaced Southport FC and did quite well award" with this entry: My  favorite football shirt is the blue, white and green Wigan Athletic  1995-1998 home shirt. The shirt symbolized the start of a new era for the club a year after a certain Mr. Whelan had bought the club. In ’97, it saw us promoted to Division 2, who would have guessed where we would be in 10 years time? Not only did the shirt see a lot of success for the club, but it had a excellent, unique design, the green braces down on the shirt really made the club stand out from all others.

Our sincere thanks to all our entrants and to all our visitors, we wish you a very Happy New Year.

17 December: One of the problems of recording kits prior to the Second Wolves 1950 Kit Photo taken at the Molineux MuseumWorld War is getting the colour tones right. This is particularly the case with the various shades of amber, gold and old gold that were used so I was very grateful to receive this photograph from Jonathon Russell and taken at the Molineux Museum, Wolverhampton. This depicts the deep shade of old gold worn by the Wolves in 1950 and earlier. Alongside the shirt is a pair of stockings from the same season that have faded to pale yellow. Elsewhere in the museum collection are shirts from the 1930s that have faded to pale cream over the years. With Jonathon's help I have added to new kits to the Wolves gallery (1887, 1928-29) and corrected some detailing on kits before 1939.

Charlton Athletic (1957-58 details of collar fly corrected).

16 December: Clyde (various details corrected 1987-2007 and logos added), York City (1992-93 corrected), Millwall (2007-08 third kit added), Stoke (late 1870s added - the club were known as Stoke Ramblers at this stage), Halifax Town (1972-73 added), Bury (1892-93 added - the team played in stripes this season as pictured here. These shirts were probably blue and white although I have not been able to confirm this.)

13 December: Manchester United will play local rivals Manchester City next February in a specially designed retro kit to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Munich tragedy, in which 23 players, officials and journalists died. Details of the kit have not been released but they will not carry sponsor's or makers logos and will not be on sale to the public. After the game, the match shirts will be donated to survivors and their familes. Read the full story at timesonline.

The Wolves gallery has been updated and a number of additions made (circa 1929, 1930-31 added: late 1880s corrected). The latter was described in contemporary records as being "faded red" and sometimes as "pink" and is shown here. These additions have ben made with the help of Jonathon Russell who produces fine colour prints illustrating the historic kits of a number of famous clubs which can be viewed at his sportsprints site.

Stirling Albion (1983-84 added).

6 December: I am grateful to Jonathon Russell who has kindly written a new narrative section for the Bootle gallery. Condensed from Tony Onslow's book, The Forgotten Rivals - A History of Bootle FC 1880-1893, this section sheds considerable light on the club who were Everton's main rivals in their day.

The Burnley gallery has been upgraded, as have those for Burton Swifts/United and Burton Wanderers. In the course of reviewing these clubs I came across this painting of Wanderers playing Newcastle United in 1895-96. Why is the Wanderers's goalkeeper wearing street clothes? The answer lurks on the Toonerama site where I found this image.

With help from Peter Ferrette I have tracked down details of the Sheffield Zulus club and added them to the Eminent Victorians. This was a representative side that played exhibition matches to raise money for British widows of the Zulu Wars between 1879 and 1882. They played in an all-black kit festooned with beads and feathers under assumed Zulu names like Ulmathoosi and Cetawayo. When on tour they paraded through the town carrying assegais, shields and other regalia before performing a Zulu dance on the pitch. Victorian sensibilities were not offended by the blatant racism of these performances but the fact that the players received a payment was another matter and in 1882 they were disbanded by order of the Sheffield FA.

Various missing kits have been added with the kind assistance of our growing army of contributors. Forfar Athletic (1990-91, 1991-92 added). Kilmarnock (1983-84, 1986-88, 1994-95, 1988-89 added and some detailing added on modern kits). Boston United (1996-98 added).

4 December : Peter Ferrette has sent me more information about early famous victorian footballers 1881Victorian teams and I've made 12 new entries to the Eminent Victorians gallery as a result. The accompanying picture on the left (click to see the full version) has several points of interest. Several players have the English FA badge sewn onto their club jerseys to show they had been capped for their country. Also note how many are wearing hooped tops - vertical stripes had not arrived at the time this was painted in 1881. It is also worth remarking that everyone is depicted wearing white britches - hardly practical but then the servants did the laundry so getting them clean would not have been a worry for these gentlemen players. As the game became popular with the working classes over the next few years, kits became noticeably more practical and hard-wearing.

Copies of this print are available from the Illustrated London News.

Club pages upgraded with new graphics: Brentford, Brighton, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers.

November 2007

27 November: Today we are launching our Christmas competition with three replica shirts by Toffs as prizes. The three winning entries will be published on the site.

I've corrected various dates in the Blackpool gallery for kits worn 2001-2007 and added three missing kits to the Bradford City archive (1903-05, 1906-07, 1966-68). The galleries for Boston United, AFC Bournemouth, Bradford City and Bradford PA have been upgraded.

23 November: Earlier this week Guardian Unlimited posted links to the HFK site in an article on Football/Premier League champions who wore stripes (Sunderland 1936 since you ask). This resulted in over 5,000 visits in just a few hours, causing our server to melt and the site was suspended temporarily. We are in the process of transferring to a server with greater capacity to ensure that this does not happen again.

Meantime, some updates have been posted: (Sunderland 2007-08 third kit: Partick Thistle 2007-08 away kit corrected: Hibernian seem to have reverted to green shorts: Bury 2007-08 away kit corrected - this is in dark chocolate and light blue, the club's original colours.)

I have also upgraded the Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers and Bootle galleries, which gives me an excuse to post this rather rare photograph of Bootle FC with the Liverpool & District Challenge Cup in 1888-89 sent to me by Greger Lindberg. A point of interest here is that several players are wearing a badge on their shirts featuring a Liver bird. I believe these are the badge of the Liverpool & District FA rather than the club, and were worn to show that the players had been capped for their county.

17 November : I was very taken by this photograph of Earlestown FC from earlestown fc 18851885, sent to me by Steve Flanagan and apparently rescued from a skip in Newton-le-Willows. It is the only known picture of the side that beat Everton to win the Liverpool & District Challenge Cup. I have added them to the Eminent Victorians Gallery along with Blackheath. Although the Heathens are now famous as one of the world's oldest Rugby Union clubs, they were founders of the English Football Association in 1863. They later left when the practice of "hacking" - kicking opponents' shins - was outlawed and helped form the Rugby Football Union, where this manly practice continued.

If have information about clubs from the Victorian period that you would like to see featured on the site, please let me know.

15 November: Martin Kendall has shed further light on early Aston Villa kits. It seems that the blue and white hooped kit recorded in 1881 was in fact worn only once, in a match against Heart of Midlothian. Because their shirts clashed, the Villains borrowed a set of change shirts for the occasion. I've now removed this item, which may come as a relief to Villa fans embarrassed that their team had once worn the blue and white of Birmingham City. I'm also persuaded that early references to Aston Villa wearing chocolate or claret with light blue were, in fact, descriptions of the same, deep shade of red.

I've also heard from Alex in the Ukraine who has identified the mystery Yeovil Town shirt posted on 31 October as having been worn between 1998 and 2000. Spasibi Alex.

The Barnet, Barnsley, Barrow and Birmingham City galleries have been upgraded.

11 November: The Aston Villa gallery has been upgraded to the new standard. The aston villa 1894photograph, from the club's official website, is from 1894, the year they won the Football League championship for the first time. The intriguing thing about this picture is that the players are wearing a mixture of shirts.

9 November: Today we're launching the next generation of HFK graphics (or HFK Vista), which I hope are more pleasing than the basic templates used to date. These will be introduced gradually and alphabetically over the next few months. Inevitably this is going to mean that some of the special galleries will have both old and new styles but I hope you'll bear with me during what will be a quite prolonged transition. Each graphic is hand crafted using the finest materials from sustainable sources. No third-world child labour is involved at any stage in the process.

Galleries updated so far: Aberdare Athletic, Accrington, Accrington Stanley (original), Accrington Stanley (modern), Aldershot, Arsenal and Ashington.

6 November: I've completed the latest contribution from Alick Milne, who hibernian 1977 kitsent me the rest of his notes for 1977-78 Scottish clubs. Missing kits have been added for Dumbarton, Dunfermline, Falkirk, Hibernian (two alternate kits worn in televised games in place of their sponsored shirts, shown left), Meadowbank Thistle, Montrose, Raith Rovers and Stranraer. Detailing has been corrected for Alloa, Berwick, Clydebank, East Fife, Morton, Partick Thistle and Queen's Park. The missing manufacturers' logos have been added to the St Mirren gallery.

4 November: Greetings to Gary Silke who sent me a sample of the old Leicester City Leicester city 1949 fa cup finalbadge which I've used to model more accurate versions on City's kits 1952-1983. Gary also sent me this fine photo of Leicester lining up before the 1949 FA Cup final against Wolves. Their manager appears to be checking his flies before being introduced to the royal personage.

Chris Worrall has sent me information that has allowed me to add some missing detailing on FA Cup Finalists 1980-89 while Simon Monks has submitted various corrections to FA Cup Finalists kits, including Wolves (1908 corrected), Portsmouth (1934 kit now confirmed and 1939 stockings corrected), Manchester City (1934, 1955 details added), Cardiff (1925 collar detailing), Blackburn (stockings amended), Derby 1946 (they wore old worn out tops for this first post war final now accurately modelled), Preston (1954 badge corrected), Nottingham Forest (1959 socks corrected) and West Brom (1968 socks corrected). The Chelsea 1997 FA Cup kit was incorrectly linked - this has now been fixed.

3 November: I've been in touch recently with Gerry Wolstenholme, who blackpool 1930 kithas written extensively on the history of Blackpool FC. He has identified the photograph on the left as being from around 1930, when Blackpool first started wearing tangerine, albeit in a rather darker shade than we are familiar with today. Gerry has also provided the background to the red, yellow and black shirts worn by the club during the Great War.

Other updates today: Hamilton Academical (1988-89 corrected). St Mirren (1987-89 detailing added). Shrewsbury Town (1978-79 added). Everton (1995 FA Cup final kit shirt sponsor corrected). Rochdale (2007-08 away kit stockings corrected).

2 November: I have added Chirk FC to the Eminent Victorians gallery. Chirk were formed in 1876 and chirk fc 1887were one of the founder members of the Football Association of Wales. In the late nineteenth century they won the Welsh Senior Cup five times - the photograph shows them with the trophy in 1887. Their most famous player, Billy Meredith, went on to play for both Manchester clubs and won 48 caps for Wales. Chirk AAA, as they are now known, still thrive to this day in the Nizam Druid Welsh National League.

Hull City (1986-87, 1987-88 corrected). Cheltenham Town (circa 1995 added - confirmation of details needed). Alloa Athletic (circa 1995 added -confirmation of dates needed). Arbroath (1992-94 detailing corrected). Greenock Morton (1989-91 detailing added).

Forest were one of the pioneers of association football: the photograph on the left shows the team on their South American tour in the summer of 1905. It was tours like this one that first established the game in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil.

30 October: Ferranti/Meadowbank Thistle/Livingston (1973-74, 1981-82, 1982-83, 2000-01 added: 1987-90, 1993-93 amended: logos added). Elgin City (1895-96, 1958-61, 1961-62, 1967-68 added). 27 October: Scottish 2007-08 new gallery completed - The new Scottish Second Division and Third Division galleries, with away and third kits, have been added.

My apologies if you were inconvenienced by the brief outage of the site earlier today. This was caused by a trainee member of staff wiring up the plug to our server incorrectly. This person has been tarred, feathered and summarily dismissed.

25 October: New Feature - I'm currently working on the 2007-08 Scottish season galleries and have added the new Scottish Premier League and Scottish First Division galleries, with away and third kits, to the site. I'll add the remaining divisions shortly and then get on to posting the large number of updates and amendments sitting in my inbox.

24 October: Sheffield FC 150 Year BadgeHappy Birthday Sheffield FC! The oldest football club in the world, founded in 1857, reaches a sprightly 150 years old today. A service was held at Sheffield Cathedral, attendees including FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Massimo Moratti, president of Inter Milan. The Italian Champions are due to play a commemorative friendly with Sheffield FC in two weeks time.

23 October: Original FA Cup TrophyNew Feature - Today we open a new wing on the HFK site containing the complete kit history of the FA Cup Finals from 1872 to the present. Enjoy.

It has been confirmed today that Nike are to buy UK sportwear manufacturer Umbro for £285m. That's a lot of replica kits.

19 October: There are reports today that Nike have made an approach to buy Umbro.

18 October: Taxi for McClaren T-Shirt Yesterday was not a great day for the Euro 2008 qualification hopes of either England or Scotland; both teams losing away to Russia and Georgia respectively. While Scotland are at least still in control of their own destiny, 'only' needing a home win against World Champions Italy in their final game, England supporters amongst you might be interested in a Taxi for McClaren shirt.

17 October:League Two has been added to the new-style 2007-08 galleries. We can now add those interesting one-off kits that turn up on special occasions so please let me know if your club turns out in something new this season.

I'm now working on a new gallery project and will make an announcement on Saturday 20th October.

16 October: The new style 2007-08 gallery with away and third kits has now been added for League One. League Two follows shortly.

12 October: New Feature! I have added revised versions of the 2007-08 English Premier League and Championship galleries, which include away and third kits. Leagues One and Two are now being written and the Scottish League will be added in due course.

10 October: The BBC reports that shirt manufacturers are taking steps to actively discourage supermarkets from stocking replica shirts and selling them at discounts. In 2003 the Office of Fair Trading fined a number of companies for price-fixing. The BBC, however, has found that since then prices have not fallen.

Meanwhile, Nick Szczepanik has picked his 50 all-time favourite football kits for Times Online.

5 October: Ten missing kits have been added to the Caledonian archive. As a result I have reorganised the Inverness Caledonian Thistle gallery with Caledonian and Inverness Thistle now presented on their own linked pages.

4 October: I've had this from Steve Hutton, on behalf of Sheffield FC, the oldest football club in the world.

Sheffield FC and Hallam in 1860One of the earliest pictures of the team, shows the club in all whites, with some players wearing dark coloured socks (see left). There is also a match report from the first ever game of football between two clubs, Sheffield FC and Hallam in 1860. The report reads that Sheffield 'turned out in their usual scarlet and white.'  It's difficult to know exactly what their strip was like at this time. But this gives an indication at least. Their first official strip, which we believe was developed later, was a scarlet shirt with a darker colour on one half, with dark shorts and socks, similar to the current 2007/08 shirt.

More updates today: Swindon Town (1981-83, 1983-84 logos added). Torquay United (1980-81 corrected). Tranmere Rovers (1982-83, 1983-85, 1986-87 details amended). Walsall (1980-81 logo added). 2 October: In last night's dramatic 4-4 draw with Aston Villa at White Hart Lane, Spurs Spurs players wearing 125th Anniversary Kitturned out in their 125th anniversary kit for the first time (left). This is modelled on the shirts adopted in 1884 when the entire Tottenham team went to Kennington Oval to watch Blackburn Rovers win the FA Cup for the first time. They were so impressed that they adopted Rovers' colours.

26 September: Pictured left is the Rangers team of 1877 wearing an all-white kit featuring a six pointed star, the emblem of the rowing club that some of the founders belonged to. August 2007

31 August: Matt and I are currently working on further improvements to site presentation and as a result, I am not for the moment adding any updates. Please be assured, however, that all new material submitted has been logged and will be put on the site as soon as the latest upgrade is complete. As usual, I'll e-mail individual contributors as soon as I have processed their submissions.

As a result, I've reviewed Plymouth Argyle's gallery and made a number of additions and amendments.

15 August: I received this from Rick Cowdrey, Head of Communications at Plymouth Argyle today: We have always worn green, David. The shades have varied considerably since we turned professional, everything from lime to racing green. So, in 2001-02, the board decided to set a standard ‘Argyle’ colour, which we have used ever since and which we have no intention of changing. That colour is near to racing green – it’s actually Pantone 3308. A couple more tweaks to the Motherwell gallery - (1957-58, 1982-84). Southend United (1975-76, 1982-83, 1987-88 added: logos added). In recent weeks I've had a lot of help from Neil Morris to capture some missing kits and details for the Walsall gallery (1987-88 restored: 1984-85, 1986-87 details amended today). Neil works for the British embassy in Addis Ababa and is, I'm fairly confident, the only Saddlers fan in Ethiopia. As a result I've been able to add six missing kits to the Everton archive and various details particularly to stocking trims between 1900 and 1963.
